Blazer vs. Blazer II

Time again for our weekend feature comparing two Blazers to each other and asking which you'd rather have. The idea is simple: leave a comment or e-mail which one of these two guys you'd most like on your team and why. You may use any criteria you wish when making your decision, but even though you probably like both, try to make a decision for one or the other. (Having to choose creates a tension that is half the fun!)

I really shouldn't bring out the ultimate matchup only the second week into the process, but the truth is everybody knows it's coming and if I don't bring it up people are going to start asking for it. Besides, it's likely to be a long weekend and this will definitely occupy the time. So here it goes. It gets no better than this...

Who do you want at power forward, Maurice Lucas or Buck Williams?

Be sure to explain your rationale. And if there's debate, try to keep it friendly!

Man, now that is one tough call. I would have to choose Buck. The only reason I must go with him is that i have actually seen him play entire games and seasons. Whereas Mr. Lucas i've only seen briefly in the end of his career and on highlights from the 70's since i'm too young. (the blazers won their first championship, then i was born a month later). I wish more players posessed Buck's passion, work ethic, and class. Really, can you get much more classy than a name of "Charles Linwood Williams III"? On a side note, What is ol Buck up to today? I think he'd probably be a wonderful coach at some level!

Wow! Two of my all-time favorites. I could go on and on about the positives of each one and really, there are so few negatives...
The one thing I can think of that may separate these two is THE RING.
So it's Lucas in a photo finish.

Buck was doing non-basketball work back on the East coast, in Maryland or the Carolinas I think. Quick's summer-league report had him helping out the Golden State youngsters though. I never understood why we didn't give him more of a voice in the organization, especially in Zach's younger years.

Aaargh. Tough one. I was going to side with Dr. Dave, but then I thought that if Buck had played alongside Walton he'd probably have a ring too...

I'll still vote for Luke ... he has an NBA player named for him and I don't think Buck does :)

But then again, Buck was cuter... (and I assume he still is.) One of these days I'm going to rehang my almost life-size poster of him.

But on the other hand, Luke was scarier...

May I weigh in? I had the privilege of seeing both of these wonderful athletes play. You cannot find two better representatives of the essence of basketball. Lucas, with his glare could back a man down without resistence. Williams could disarm you with his comical goggles then roll off his pick for an uncontested dunk. Both brought the kind of physical play many teams only dream about in today's game. Both played on great 'teams'. While Walton and Drexler were the respective stars, the spotlight in those eras shined on the team. Perhaps that is what made these two such favorites with us - they had something in mind bigger than themselves.
So how does one determine who was best? Well, Maurice did make it to the pinnacle and Buck almost got there. Lucas was probably more of an offensive player. Not to say he didn't play D. Williams was a ferocious defender who could also put the ball in the hoop. Off court, both were civic minded gentlemen. All these examples are just stating the obvious: it's a tough decision. So I retreat into a mental fantasy where I see the two of them going one-on-one. I imagine them shucking and jiving, faking and driving, trashing and high-fiving... Long into the night they go, 'til I finally tire of waiting for a winner. As I slink quietly into the shadows I hear Buck say, "Man, you are one tough dude. Let's go home and call it even." The Enforcer responds, I'm pooped. But this ain't over. We'll finish this later."

Lucas. Mostly for his no-nonsense toughness. He could keep others in line. Buck drinks milkshakes.

Thank you Goldstreet! Excellent mental picture and post. I hope it would happen just like that.

I'm late to this but Lucas because he could shoot. One-on-one, face-up, with the ball in his hands at the end of the game. He hit big shots.

Buck was very good but he was a complementary player, an adjunct.

Got to go with the Enforcer by a whisker because of his more complete offensive + defensive game. Buck was obviously the better defender but Maurice wasn't a slouch in that department and they both brought the Windex equally well. Maurice had the added ability to get you that big time clutch basket to put you over the top and that's tough to beat.
